In recent years, the formation of start-up companies has been increasing. Financial support has become increasingly available to develop a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem, and many individuals are deciding to turn an idea into a business. Starting a new business, though exciting, comes with potential risks. According to the report of the University of Wolverhampton in 2021, 20% of businesses fail in their first year, and around 60% will go bust within the first three years. The main reason for this is running out of cash.
In this Dii Finance module, we are honored to invite Berry Schrijen, an experienced CFO, to bring us three lectures on entrepreneurial finance. After these lectures, you will not only gain plenty of knowledge about finance and project valuation, but may also open up your own entrepreneurial finance stories with courage.
We are looking forward to your attendance!

Lecture 1: Financial Storytelling for Startups
During this first lecture, Berry will explain how to tell a Startup Story in a financially attractive way without actually talking about finance. He will do so by combining financial theory with a bit of philosophy to finally dive into the art of ‘Financial Storytelling for Startups’. The session will conclude with an example case of a successful financial storyteller from the TV Show ‘Shark Tank’.
Lecture 2: Financial Modelling for Startups
During the second lecture, Berry will show how to value your Startup using the Excel-based financial model that will be provided to you. This session can be used as guidance for filling out the financial model and is a prelude to the 1:1 coaching sessions provided by Berry as well. This session will be recorded, so you will be able to review it later as well.
Lecture 3: The (Hi)Story of Startups
During the third lecture, Berry will provide a brief history of ‘the world of Startups’ and explain what has driven the success – and later partial failure – of companies like WeWork and Uber. This session is optional to attend.
