Led by the Innovation Lab (InLab) of Duke Kunshan University, we had a journey of exploration on Augmented Reality (AR) technology. This event unveiled the mystery of AR technology and was a hands-on experience to inspire creativity. The IWS event was held as scheduled on the afternoon of February 23, 2024, at Duke Kunshan University, attracting many curious participants about AR technology.
The keynote speaker of today’s workshop is Jingyang Lin (Elijah) from the class of 2026. At the beginning of the event, we first learned about the concept of AR technology and its application in the real world through a wonderful video. The speaker, Jingyang Lin (Elijah), then introduced in detail the basic concepts of AR, including its difference from Virtual Reality (VR) and how AR can provide a new interactive experience by augmenting the real world. This experience is not only immersive but also highly practical, as demonstrated by AR games such as Pokémon GO.
Immediately after that, we entered the climax of the event – the hands-on experience of Reality Composer and Reality Composer Pro. Guided by the presenter, participants took out their iPhones, iPads, or Mac devices and installed the corresponding software. Through these tools, we were able to design and build AR applications and experience the fun of integrating virtual elements into the real world. This process not only gave us a deeper understanding of AR technology but also let us feel the infinite possibilities of combining technology and creativity.
Participating student Jiawen Ren, from the class of 2027, who experienced the charm of AR technology during the event, exclaimed, “This IWS event gave me a new understanding of AR technology. Through hands-on practice, I learned how to seamlessly integrate the virtual world with the real world, and this experience was unprecedented. I was especially impressed with the ease of use and power of Reality Composer Pro. I am confident that this knowledge will help me in my future endeavors.
During the hands-on sessions, participants showed amazing creativity. Some designed interactive educational applications, while others created art displays, and teams collaborated to develop an AR-based game. These works not only demonstrated the technical skills of the participants but also reflected their infinite imagination on the future application of AR technology!
As the event ended, we not only learned the basics of AR technology but more importantly, we experienced how the technology inspires our creativity and how we can turn these ideas into practical applications. The IWS event was not only a transfer of knowledge, but also a touching of the heart, which made us look forward to the future.
Through hands-on instruction, students not only mastered the intricacies of 3D modeling software but also understood the practical applications of 3D printing and developed a 3D design mindset. The shared experience was rich and compact, equipping participants with the knowledge needed for future innovative endeavors. In the next stage, the Innovation Lab will continue to conduct workshops on different topics around the use of 3D printing as well as areas such as AR and hand drawing boards.
