Box Design Challenge: A Future Multigenerational Living Community
One Place Box is expected to become the desirable place for all generations’ social communication. With the possibility of social connection of urban youth as the underlying logic, One Place Box has the advantage of a moveable and changeable form and can provide public spaces with a diverse array of functions.
U-Corp@OnePlaceBox (Elderly) is dedicated to enhancing the community’s age-friendliness. The team presents a range of cultural exchange spaces that foster language preservation and celebrate local cultural heritage. They also incorporate cultural activity areas that facilitate learning and exploration of new technologies. Additionally, they prioritize the inclusion of rest areas specifically tailored for the elderly. The team members hope to provide comprehensive care for individuals of all ages within the community, especially for those in their later stages of life. By implementing shared facilities in the multigenerational co-living community, they effectively minimize the possibility of redundant construction and unused spaces.
U-Corp@OnePlaceBox (Younger Generation) takes an innovative approach by considering the perspective of the younger generation. By adopting a fictional scenario depicting the life and work environment of a young professional, they analyzed the daily flow of time and identified key living spaces relevant to this demographic. Building upon that, they also took into consideration the lifestyle of other age groups. In the end, the team presented a detailed intergenerational community living space consisting of three distinct levels, each with its own unique features. “Taking control of your own life” and “Heal through living, understand through sharing” were the guiding principles.
U-Corp@OnePlaceBox (Families) focuses on designing a suitable multigenerational community space for all members of a family, considering individuals from different generations with diverse life experiences. The team conducted extensive desk research and literature reviews, seeking potential possibilities for multigenerational co-living. Through intensive on-site interviews and observations, they not only witnessed real-life scenarios and the practical application of the “sharing space model,” but also constructed classic behaviors and lifestyles of the elderly and young people along with the daily routines of different generations. Based on their thorough research and discussions, they proposed an “entertainment + learning” solution for OnePlaceBox. By providing a range of entertainment activities suitable for all ages, they believe that combining education and leisure can create shared experiences among all family members and establish a future multigenerational co-living community applicable to most families.
