Millions of women in the world are suffering discomfort, friction and leakage caused by traditional, single-use pads, while reusable menstrual underwear is difficult to clean completely and often relies on non-biodegradable superabsorbent polymers. This project proposes a two-part menstrual system, which is the combination of comfortable, reusable underwear with changeable, fully biodegradable absorbent inserts. These inserts are made from a new composite of seaweed extract and konjac fibers, which can immediately gelate menstrual fluid when it contacts with the insert. It can remain thin at the same time because a “fiber-constrained” design prevents swelling and chafing during movement. The underwear has multiple layers. The hydrophobic top layer for quick fluid passage, a cellulose fiber (banana/hemp) distribution layer that prevents lateral leakage, and the breathable waterproof bottom layer. The inserts are designed to be flushed or composted, which can be biodegraded within weeks. Target users include females who are experiencing period and seeking comfort during sports. Women who are concerned about the environmental issue caused by single-used pads or those who come from less-developed areas are also our target users. Our competitive advantage lies in our unique proprietary alginate/konjac composite, which combines both high absorption with zero swelling. All the materials that are used come from agricultural waste, like banana fiber and konjac, which reduces the material costs. Initial funding of 20000 RMB will be used to support prototype development, material testing, and a pilot user study. The project aims to launch within 12 months, offering a dignified, sustainable and comfortable period solution that enables women to move freely without compromise.
